Training/Education

Although formal training or specific education may not be required, some respondents said that individuals seeking Laborer positions should have a High School diploma. If you don’t have a High School diploma or its equivalent, the following organizations can help you pass your General Education Development  (GED) examinations:

Other respondents said they provide on-the-job training for Laborer positions. For example, one respondent mentioned “on the job experience in a journeyman program or training by experts in the field.” Alternatively, Chamber Members like CareerSource Gulf Coast, The Bay Economic Development Alliance, and The LEAD Coalition offer training services that can help you attain a Laborer position.

Skills/Experience

  • Ability to read blueprints
  • Basic construction knowledge
  • Capable of learning quickly
  • Drivers license
  • Experience in exterior construction and metal work
  • General knowledge of cleaning or cooking (FDA is more detailed)
  • Manage inventories and forklift operator
  • Must know how to operate heavy machinery
  • Operate equipment, construction math, plan reading
  • Reliable, show up for work
  • Vocational training would be a plus
  • 1+ year is preferred on systems utilized
  • 5 years minimum in any number of the services that [my company] offers
